Champions League: Lyon defeats Barcelona 3-1 and makes his reign clear

MEXICO CITY (proceso.com.mx).- Lyon defeated Barcelona 3-1 in the final of the UEFA Women’s Champions League and made it clear that their reign in the top tournament at the women’s club level is far from over.

The women’s Champions League experienced one more final, this time the venue was the Juventus Stadium, in Turin. And the clubs that led the fight to win the European trophy were Olypique de Lyon and Barcelona.

The previous meeting generated great expectations due to the recent history of both squads. On the one hand, the Blaugrana squad recently conquered the Spanish Women’s League, winning all 30 games they played, obtaining 90 points and a total of 159 goals scored and only 11 conceded. In addition, he reached the Champions League final to defend the title he won last season.

For its part, Lyon -and with two dates remaining- leads the French Women’s League, as it has 58 points (19 wins, 1 draw, 0 losses), which represents an advantage of five units with its closest competitor: the PSG, the team he will face on the following day.

To this we must add that it is the most successful club in the Women’s Champions League, with seven titles conquered; five of them were achieved consecutively (from the 2015-16 season to the 2019-20 season).

A minute later, Amandine Henry, after a sweep, recovered a ball in the Barcelona field and shot from long distance, a shot that ended up opening the scoring for Lyon. At minute 22, once again the French team managed to break the Blaugrana nets, as Ada Hegerberg scored with a header.

The continued pressure from the Lyon players paid off again in the 32nd minute, when Catarina Macario simply pushed the ball in to make it 3-0. At minute 40, Alexia Putellas got the discount for Barcelona and, although it seemed that this goal would work as a shock, the scoreboard did not move anymore. In this way, Olympique Lyon won its eighth crown in the UEFA Women’s Champions League.
