Liverpool have won the third game after winning the long-awaited league title. The streak against Manchester City was followed by a difficult victory over Aston Villa and also against Brighton & Hove Albion it was anything but smooth, despite a spectacular opening phase.
Jürgen Klopp’s team already led 0-2 after 8 minutes. Brighton was not officially safe at the start, but took it easy and gave Liverpool the opening goal as a gift: goalkeeper Matt Ryan defended through the middle, Davy Pröpper lost the ball and Mohamed Salah ultimately benefited. Almost immediately after that it also became 0-2, via a curl from the second line of Jordan Henderson.
The Dutch champion seemed to be in safe haven with this, but had his hands full with the number fifteen. Leandro Trossard created the most danger and also signed the goal on the stroke of half-time: the Belgian was released after a smooth attack over the right by Tariq Lamptey and shot in the opposite direction. That 1-2 score remained on the plates for a long time, partly because Dan Burn missed an open opportunity. Liverpool was able to breathe a sigh of relief fifteen minutes before the end: Mohamed Salah headed in his second of the evening from a corner and recorded the 1-2 final score.
The Reds stand at 92 points after their thirtieth win of the season and have four more games to break the magical 100 mark. Pröpper and his team remain at 36 points, nine more than number 18 Aston Villa.
