Chamber asks for extension of the ‘right to be forgotten’ to the chronically ill

The House of Representatives unanimously approved a resolution on Wednesday to extend the ‘right to be forgotten’ to patients with certain chronic diseases. According to the House, if the disease is under control, insurance companies should no longer take this into account in debt balance policies.

Since February 1, 2020, ex-cancer patients have a ‘right to be forgotten’ if they want to take out outstanding balance insurance. This means that insurers are no longer allowed to take the disease into account once the treatment has been completed for ten years.

However, patients with chronic conditions such as type 1 diabetes still have to pay an extra premium today if they want to take out outstanding balance insurance. The House now wants to change that. In a resolution she asks for the right to be forgotten when taking out outstanding balance insurance to be extended to patients with certain chronic diseases, provided that the disease is under control.

In concrete terms, the House asks the Federal Knowledge Center for Healthcare (KCE) to draw up a proposal for chronic diseases that qualify. In addition to type 1 diabetes, parliament is also thinking of MS, for example. A first start is expected this spring.
