CFE Internet Plan Advertises 40GB Data, But Hidden Restrictions Apply
Mexico City – The Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) is offering a new internet package for mobile phones featuring 40GB of data, but details revealed in filings with the Federal Telecommunications Institute (IFT) reveal limitations not prominently advertised by the CFE. While promoted as a straightforward data plan for use within Mexico, the offering includes stipulations regarding data speeds, international usage, and restrictions on sharing.
The CFE plan’s primary feature is a 40GB data allowance for navigation, intended for use only within Mexico. However, the IFT record – under folio 1244658 – details that the plan also includes 750 minutes for calls and 500 SMS messages to the United States and/or Canada, deducted from the total Mexican allowance. This discrepancy highlights a gap between the CFE’s marketing and the official terms registered with the regulatory body.
The IFT documentation further clarifies that the 40GB data bag is tiered. The first 20GB are offered at maximum speed (“best effort”), with 5GB of that allotment usable in the US and/or Canada. The remaining 20GB are throttled to a speed of 512 Kbps, but this speed reduction only applies within Mexico.
Moreover, while CFE advertising suggests social network access is exclusive to Mexico, the IFT registration indicates a 3GB data bag for use in the United States and/or Canada specifically for WhatsApp, Telegram, and Messenger.
The CFE’s plan conditions also stipulate that data cannot be shared with other users, and unused data, minutes, and messages do not roll over to the following month, requiring a new recharge to continue service.
