Centuries-old Dutch atlas auctioned for 325,000 euros

The sea atlas is, according to experts, a milestone in cartography. It contains a general map of Europe and 44 sub-maps that almost completely represent the European coasts of the Atlantic Ocean, the North Sea and the Baltic Sea.

The book is now called Speculum Nauticum, but was previously published under the Dutch title Spieghel der Zeevaerdt. The Briton bought the atlas from the Dutchman Lucas Janszoon Waghenaer, reports the auction house Ketterer Kunst. The atlas had been privately owned for more than twenty years.
