Central Council advises against teaching Hessian Islam

Hesse’s Minister of Culture Lorz regrets the attitude of the Central Council of Muslims to the state offer.

Minister of Culture Alexander Lorz (CDU) regrets that the Central Council of Muslims advises parents against sending their children to state-organized Islam classes at Hessian schools. Lorz put it in the cultural-political committee of the state parliament on Wednesday that he was “not entirely successful with his convincing work”.

Lorz had announced two weeks ago that Hesse would suspend religious religion classes in cooperation with the Turkish Islamic organization Ditib at the end of the school year. Ditib is no longer a suitable partner because the national association is not sufficiently independent of the Turkish state, the Minister of Education argued.

Hesse will in future offer Muslim lessons to Muslim students who have previously taken part in this religious education, which is organized by the state without cooperation with a religious community. According to the minister, he should inform the pupils about the religion “neutrally” and not, like the usual religious instruction, with a “claim to truth”. New students can also register for this lesson if it is offered at their school.

The Central Council of Muslims rejects this. Hesse’s state chairman Said Barkan wrote on Facebook: “We already said at the start of the school trial that we consider such a model of ‘Islam teaching’ given by the state to be unconstitutional and will not support it.” The association therefore recommends to all Muslim parents, ” not to register their children for the subject of ‘Islam lessons’ but for the subject of ethics ”.

Six schools get on

The state Islam lessons started this year as a school trial and should be expanded when the cooperation with Ditib expires for the new school year. This Islam lesson is to begin at six schools that have not yet been there. These included the Ernst Reuter School II in Frankfurt, the Mathildenschule in Offenbach and the Anne Frank School in Raunheim, said Lorz.

The teachers should include those who have previously held confession-oriented Islam classes. Lorz announced that they would be trained accordingly.
