CD&V chairman applies for ethical themes of purple-green

CD&V chairman Joachim Coens does not intend to join his party in a Vivaldi coalition if the purple-green ethical agenda is maintained. ‘Then we will fit’.

In the coming days, the eyes of domestic politicians will be on the attitude of the CD&V. Royal commissioner Egbert Lachaert is trying to mobilize a purple-green coalition. But such a government of greens, liberals and socialists could use the support of CD&V to form a stable majority in parliament. That way a Vivaldi coalition would emerge.

Not the preferred scenario

Joachim Coens will inform CD&V MPs on Monday about the latest developments and hear whether there is willingness to join a Vivaldi coalition.

He is not completely averse to such a coalition, he indicates in Het Nieuwsblad. ‘The coalition with PS and N-VA is our preferred scenario, we have more confidence in that in advance. If another proposal comes up, it will still be a matter of searching and groping to first gain confidence and then take steps further. We must first hear what the choice is and whether they want us at all. If so, the next step is to see what they are willing to do for that. ‘

Essential in the discussions will be the project with which Lachaert will try to glue CD&V. Coens is very clear about this. ‘What will be the binding agent between those parties? If that is a purple-green ethical agenda with a Belgian flavor on it, then we fit. We will gladly oppose this in the coming years. But if it becomes a central coalition with a strong socio-economic story, then we want to listen. ‘

CD&V mainly focuses on the recovery of the economy. Among other things, strengthening purchasing power, fair taxation and investments in healthcare are central to this.

The CD&V chairman does not hesitate, because his party has not had good experiences with purple-green governments in the past. Also, don’t underestimate the CD&V trauma of the purple and purple-green governments under Guy Verhofstadt. Those governments, in the early 2000s, represent everything that our party does not stand for. It is unthinkable for us to be in one remake to step away from it. ‘
