CDC Prohibited Exhaust Masks, Doctors Explain There is a Risk of Corona Transmission

Jakarta

United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) remind the community not to use masker exhaust, because it is considered to increase the risk of spreading corona virus COVID-19.

“Masks with valves or breathing vents should NOT be used to help prevent people wearing masks from spreading COVID-19 to others,” said the CDC’s official website regarding its new guidelines.

How can COVID-19 spread if you use an exhaust mask?

According to a pulmonologist from the Friendship Hospital, Dr. Diah Handayani, SpP, the vent in the exhaust mask allows virus particles to come out while we are talking.

“With a mask that has an exhaust, it is possible that the air that is exhaled will be exhaled when we talk, it will also come out, the particles will come out,” said Dr. Diah when contacted. detikcom, Friday (14/8/2020).

Another pulmonologist from the Friendship Hospital, Dr. Erlang Samoedro, SpP, also emphasized that this type of mask is very ineffective in preventing the transmission of COVID-19. Wearing it can actually harm other people.

“If a person is confirmed to be sick with COVID-19 and then wears this mask, it is the same as not wearing a mask. He is protected from external threats, but instead threatens people outside,” said Dr. Erlang in a separate interview, Friday (14/8/2020).

In this regard, Dr. Diah explained the possibility of the CDC issuing these guidelines to anticipate the risk of airborne transmission of COVID-19. Moreover, the World Health Organization (WHO) has provided guidelines on how COVID-19 can be transmitted and one of them is through airborne.

“So the element is caution in using masks like that,” he said.
