CDC ‌Streamlines Dog Importation ‌Rules from Low-Risk Countries

Published: July 26,2024 ⁤ | ‌By Dr. Michael⁣ Lee,World-Today-News

The⁤ Centers for Disease Control and⁢ Prevention (CDC) has announced significant changes to its⁤ regulations regarding the‍ importation of dogs into the United States. These updates, designed to⁣ simplify the‍ process for pet owners traveling from rabies-free and low-risk countries, aim to protect both public and animal health while preventing the reintroduction of rabies into the U.S.

Responding⁤ to Public and Industry Feedback

The revised rules are the ‌result of extensive feedback ‌gathered from the public, industry partners, and international representatives concerning the existing dog importation regulations. The CDC‍ has specifically focused on clarifying and streamlining ‌procedures for ⁢dogs originating from regions‍ with a negligible risk‌ of rabies transmission.

New Requirements Effective August 1, 2024

Effective August 1, ⁤2024, at 12:00 AM⁣ Eastern Time, dogs that have resided exclusively in ⁣rabies-free or low-risk countries for the preceding six months will have ⁢a substantially easier path to entry. Instead of previously required documentation, these dogs will⁣ now be admissible with a⁣ simple submission receipt from the CDC Import Form.

This form can be‌ completed ⁢online on the day of travel, and the resulting receipt can be presented to airlines and U.S. border officials either as a printed copy or digitally via a mobile device. Importantly, ⁢the receipt is valid for six months from the date⁤ of issuance, allowing for multiple entries into the United States within that timeframe.

Vital ⁤Note: All dogs entering the ⁣United States,‍ regardless of origin,‍ must be microchipped and at least six⁣ months of age.

Regulations⁤ for⁣ High-Risk Countries Remain in Place

The CDC ⁣emphasizes that⁤ the existing, more stringent documentation and requirements⁤ will continue to apply ⁤to dogs traveling from countries designated⁣ as high-risk for rabies. Pet owners planning to bring ⁣dogs‍ from⁢ these regions should consult the CDC’s ‌website for detailed details.
