Cause of mysterious illness in India possibly found

A team of medical experts is on their way to the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh to open an investigation into the mysterious disease that broke out last weekend and which has left hundreds of residents hospitalized. The preliminary investigation on the spot would have already revealed a possible cause.

A several hundred inhabitants of the village of Eluru suddenly started showing symptoms such as nausea, convulsions and fainting last weekend. More than 500 of them had to be hospitalized, a 45-year-old man died of the as yet unknown condition.

The situation on the ground is so serious that a team of medical experts, including some members of the World Health Organization (WHO), is traveling to the region to investigate the mysterious disease. What is certain: it is not about corona. The patients have all tested negative for the virus and water or air pollution would also be excluded. Tests already being conducted on-site would show patients have high levels of lead, nickel and other heavy metals in their blood, a local MP told BBC News. That may be the cause, although it is not yet clear how the metals ended up in the blood of those involved.
