Cases of HIV/AIDS in Surabaya are dominated by men aged 25-29 years

SURABAYA, KOMPAS.com – Cases of HIV/AIDS in the City Surabaya to be the highest in East Java in 2021. The number of cases of people with HIV/AIDS in the city in 2021 reached 323 people.

Head of City Health Office SurabayaNanik Sukristina said the HIV/AIDS sufferers are currently in the treatment process or have received treatment by the municipal government Surabaya.

Nanik ensured, sufferers and people infected with HIV do not show any symptoms.

Nanik explained, in its spread, this virus more often infects heterosexual groups and sexual orientation between men and women.

Meanwhile, the age most affected by this virus is the age of 25 to 44 years.

“But the highest age is the age of 25 to 29 years, then followed by the age of 30 to 32 years. The most affected are men with a percentage of 73 percent,” said Nanik at the Surabaya Health Office, Tuesday (18/1/2022).

As for the type of work that is prone to contracting the HIV/AIDS virus, it is employees with a percentage of 46.2 percent. Followed by housewives with 18.9 percent, and entrepreneurs with 14.6 percent.

Then, in certain sexual groups, namely 46 percent homosexual, 49 percent heterosexual, and 2.3 percent bisexual.

“Education and prevention are important, especially for families. Because housewives are also at risk of being exposed to the virus,” said Nanik.

He said that the sub-districts with the most HIV/AIDS sufferers were Sawahan and Tambaksari sub-districts.

“That’s why we are trying to make an early discovery, so that we can provide intervention and the chance of recovery will be greater,” he said.
