CAS rejects Russian bobsleighers’ appeal for disqualification

The appeals of Russian bobsleighers – Alexander Zubkov, Alexander Kasyanov, Iļvira Huzina and Alexei Pushkarev – were rejected with the entry into force on January 16, 2019 of the International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation (IBSF) announcement of two-year disqualification for these athletes.

Disqualification begins in December 2018, but all results achieved by athletes are canceled from February 2014.

The appeals were heard on 23 April by videoconference. At the same time, WADA’s appeal against the IBSF decision was considered. WADA announced in March 2019 that it considered the penalty against athletes to be insufficient and would seek to increase the period of disqualification to four years. CAS has also rejected this appeal.

At the end of 2017, the Disciplinary Commission of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), chaired by Denis Osvalds, found Zubkov, Alexei Vojevod, Kasyanov, Pushkarev and Huzin guilty of anti-doping rule violations, annulled their results at the Sochi Olympics and imposed a lifetime ban on participating in the Olympics. Later, CAS disqualifications for life from the Olympics were replaced by the release of the 2018 Games in Pyongyang.

It has already been reported that after the disqualification of Russian athletes during the World Cup stage and European Championship in Sigulda on February 15 this year, Latvian bobsleigh pilot Oskars Melbārdis and pushers Daumants Dreiškens, Arvi Vilkastis and Jānis Strengs received gold medals at the 2014 Sochi Olympic Games in a solemn ceremony. Melbārdis with Dreišken’s neck also won a bronze award for two.

Already in November 2017, the IOC annulled the results obtained by Zubkov and his crews in the Sochi Games, because manipulations of athletes’ doping analyzes were detected, replacing them with “pure” tests.
