Carlos Ghosn Mocks Nissan Outright

Jakarta

Former Nissan boss Carlos Ghosn issued a strong statement against the company he once led. The man who is still a fugitive said Nissan is a company that has no vision and is far behind in terms of vehicle electrification.

“They (Nissan) are really in a bad position in this race (electric car production), they don’t even have a vision. They don’t know where the company is going. They also don’t have an idea of the big technological transformation that is happening now, ” Ghosn said while attending a virtual press conference, recently.

Nissan actually has long-term plans for electric car products. The manufacturer had introduced what they called ‘Ambition 2030’, in which all production and sales of Nissan cars will carry electric power that year.

In fact, Nissan has also prepared funds of US$ 17.6 billion or equivalent to Rp. 252 trillion to invest in the electric car sector. But this strategy is now being scorned by his former boss himself.

Ghosn says Nissan has been too slow with its electrification strategy. He believes that Nissan needs a fast transition from internal fuel cars to electric power, so that Nissan can compete with other brands that have already entered the production of electric vehicles.

Furthermore, Ghosn stated that the electric car manufacturer Tesla and several brands from China are now superior in the automotive world than traditional names in the industry.

“New entrants such as Tesla and other manufacturers from China are in a better position. Now is the time for automotive manufacturers to accelerate electrification in order to be competitive,” he continued.

Carlos Ghosn played an important role behind the presence of the Nissan Leaf electric car, which was first launched in 2010. But at that time, electric cars were still underestimated because sales of internal combustion cars were still high.

However, a decade later everything has changed. Now, automotive manufacturers are competing against each other in creating electric cars that have qualified specifications at affordable prices.

This is not the first time Ghosn has criticized Nissan, some time ago Ghosn said Nissan has now turned into a boring and mediocre company. He also considered Nissan as having difficulty finding a suitable place in the automotive industry.

Carlos Ghosn has served as CEO of Nissan. He was then arrested in November 2018 on charges of inappropriate salary reports and misappropriation of company money.

Then in December 2019, Ghosn fled Japan by hiding in a musical instrument box. He spent 30 minutes in the box to get on a private jet and fly to Lebanon.

Currently Carlos Ghosn is in Beirut, Lebanon. He can freely live there, because Lebanon is a country that does not have an extradition treaty with Japan.
