Cardinal Omella vindicates the act of “enormous and generous love” that involves being an organ donor – Spanish Church

This Saturday, February 27, the National Transplant Day. An anniversary that is commemorated with the aim of honoring the people who each year dare to donate some of their organs to save lives. A decision that is as supportive and full of love as it is risky in some cases. A subject, that of transplants, that Spain not only approves with a note, rather it is one of the first of the class worldwide, reaching the figure of 40 donors for every million people.

In 2019,Spain reached an all-time high in kidney and lung transplantation, as well as the number of donors whose rate has been placed at 48.9 donors per million population, with a total of 2,301 donors, 2.7 percent more. Figures that place it light years away from many other countries in the world.

A trend that, due to the pandemic, has been truncated in 2020. According to reports, in Spain the reduction of these interventions has been less than expected, estimating that they have been reduced by 20%. A reality that, in addition, it is expected to be corrected throughout this 2021.

Kidney transplantation is the one that occurs most frequently in our countryThis being the reason why patients who hope to benefit from this gesture of solidarity from an anonymous donor have to wait longer. The average waiting time is around a year and a half.

The Spanish Episcopal Conference did not want to miss this National Transplant Day. For this reason, its president, Cardinal Juan José Omella, has used his official Twitter account to vindicate this beautiful gesture that involves donating an organ to those who need it.

“Being an organ donor is one of the most humane and supportive gestures that exist. A huge, generous and selfless act of love. Give life to save lives ”, said in the tweet the Archbishop of Barcelona.
