Car thieves stopped focusing on the luxury segment

Russian hijackers began to steal more affordable cars, this is evidenced by a study (available from Gazeta.Ru) of comprehensive insurance contracts conducted by Renaissance Insurance in a cut over five years. If in 2015 criminals were interested in premium Infiniti, Range Rover and Audi, now they are content with mid-priced models Hyundai, Kia and Toyota.

The first place in the number of thefts in Russia in the first half of 2020 was taken by the Japanese Toyota Camry sedan, the second place was taken by the popular Korean Hyundai Creta crossover, the Toyota Land Cruiser 200 SUV, the fourth Hyundai ix35 crossover, and the Kia Rio sedan closed the top five. Such data are provided by the company “Renaissance Insurance”, which conducted a study of its insurance portfolio in auto insurance for the occurrence of insured events of the risk of “hijacking”. The study identified the ten most stolen models.

Next in the top ten most stolen cars are Hyundai Tucson and Toyota RAV4 crossovers, Ford Focus in all body types (production stopped in Russia since 2019), as well as the Kia Ceed hatchback and station wagon and the Soul SUV.

Renaissance Insurance compared the data on thefts in this half of the year with the same period in 2015.

It turned out that five years ago, the hijackers were choosing much more expensive cars. So, in January-June 2015, the top five most stolen cars, according to the insurer, were premium SUVs and crossovers: Nissan Murano, Infiniti QX80, Honda Pilot, Range Rover Sport and Audi Q7.

Next, in the top ten most popular cars from criminals in the second half of 2015 are Toyota Land Cruser 200, Mazda 6, Kia Optima, Land Rover Discovery and Mazda 3. It is noteworthy that the change in tastes of car criminals automatically affected the cost of comprehensive insurance. If in the first half of 2015 the average price of a comprehensive insurance policy (includes the risks of “theft” and “damage”) was 52 thousand rubles, now the same policy costs an average of 41.4 thousand rubles, which is 20.5% cheaper. reported in “Renaissance Insurance”.

“Five years ago, mostly Japanese and expensive Germans were hijacked, the frequency of hijackings was higher and the average payment was also higher. Now, Toyota and mass-market cars of the Korean brands Kia and Hyundai are mainly stolen. The frequency of theft has decreased, as has the average insurance premium for theft. This made it possible to reduce the average motor hull insurance premium by more than 20%, ”Sergey Demidov, Managing Director of Auto Insurance at Renaissance Insurance, told Gazeta.Ru.

There is a decrease in the interest of thieves in premium cars, but it is of a situational nature, auto expert Sergey Ifanov believes.

With the improvement of the financial situation of most of the citizens, this trend will end, he believes.

“In fact, the illegal market is also a market and, oddly enough, market laws are not alien to it. If buyers of criminal goods or customers have decreased, let’s say, purchasing opportunities, then the choice of thieves changes in favor of something more affordable, ”Ifanov said.
