Car found in residential area Venlo that may have been used in a bomb raid in Germany | Inland

As a precaution, the area was cordoned off and two apartment buildings and a number of homes were evacuated. It is unclear exactly how many people have had to leave their homes. The residents were temporarily housed in a nearby garden center.

The Explosive Ordnance Disposal Service has examined the car for explosive material. The emergency services withdrew around half past ten and the car was released. The situation is now safe again. No explosives were found in the vehicle. The team is now carrying out forensic investigations for traces of the car. So far, no one has been arrested.

After the report of the explosives raid in Germany, extra patrols were carried out by the police in the border region. After a spotted car was spotted at the border crossing in Venlo, an investigation was also carried out in the vicinity of the location where, after a similar report, a car was found in September last year that was involved in a similar explosive device.

In Gebroeders Wienerstraat, officers then found a blue Volkswagen Golf with two bags and an ignition mechanism in it. The police suspect that the vehicle was used in the explosion in Essen.

Essen

The explosion at an ATM in Essen took place early in the morning on Monday. The bank branch and a number of adjacent buildings were badly damaged. No one was injured. The apartments above the bank have been evacuated. The residents are taken care of elsewhere. The force of the explosion also shattered windows across the street. It is being investigated whether explosive material is still left in the building. The area has been cordoned off.

According to the police, ‘something was stolen’ in the explosion, but a police spokesperson cannot say what exactly.
