The police are investigating whether there is indeed a targeted action. Immediately after the collision, dozens of police officers and other emergency workers came to the site. The vehicle was registered in the Lippe region in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.

It is not clear whether Merkel was in the office at the time of the incident. The Bundeskanzleramt is located on Platz der Republik near the parliament building in the center of the German capital.
