The car has Romanian registration

They detained a record amount of undeclared currency at the Kapitan Andreevo border crossing. More than 1.5 million euros were found in a car. The car has a Romanian registration, and a Turkish citizen was behind the wheel.

“He traveled from Romania, through Bulgaria to Turkey,” said Maria Kirilova, deputy district prosecutor of Haskovo.

The man was detained on March 23. He was traveling with his wife, who is a Romanian citizen, and their 18-month-old child. The money was distributed in 8 envelopes and hidden under the seats.

“They looked like a standard family. But according to the “risk analysis” method, the colleagues have selected the car for a thorough inspection and have established the presence of this huge amount”, stated Georgi Gospodinov, head of the MP “Captain Andreevo”.

The man was detained for 72 hours and charged.

“The law provides for a penalty of imprisonment or confiscation of one-fifth of the value of the undeclared currency. The subject of the crime in this case is the currency and it is not subject to cancellation, after the decision of the Court of the EU came out in 2018, where it was said that the cancellation of the currency is excessively severe”, said Maria Kirilova.

Analyzes show that usually all this money that moves from Western Europe to Turkey is from criminal activity and goes to criminal activity.

The family explained to the investigators in our country that they earned the money from the sale of buses in Romania and wanted to use it to buy real estate in Turkey.
