We already count more than 100,000 confirmed corona cases in our country. To this end, an immense amount of testing has been carried out by the GPs and analyzed in the labs. “An underappreciated feat,” Marc Van Ranst calls it. At the same time, he also warns against the post-corona era: “We cannot possibly maintain this test pace.”

More than 100,000 Belgians have been infected with Covid-19 since February. So a huge number of people got a ‘swab’ pushed in the nose by the doctor, and the laboratories had to process a cartload of samples. “It’s a feat that they have managed to do all that”, says virologist Marc Van Ranst.

He does wonder how long they can continue to test on such a large scale. A concern that several GPs sent out to the world last week. “In the past, you only went to the doctor when you were sick,” says Van Ranst. “Now those doctors get everyone to visit: people who are perfectly healthy and want to be tested, and even people who only need a certificate to go abroad.”

Should we then send fewer people to the doctor? “Less testing is not an option,” says Van Ranst. “But we did set up those test villages, for example, to relieve the general practitioners somewhat.” Still, he acknowledges that many GPs and labs are getting more and more work. “And that will be difficult,” says Van Ranst. “Especially now that the typical respiratory infection season is approaching. Colds, for example, will start to circulate. That can create confusion, which makes everyone want to be tested. ”

According to Van Ranst, it will therefore be difficult for GPs and laboratories to maintain this test pace. “Still, we have to keep this up until there is a vaccine,” he says. “Then we have to slow down. We will really have to unlearn to walk to the doctor for every cough. ”
