Scientists at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center collected and analyzed data from more than 8,000 Americans over the age of 45, recruited between 2003 and 2007. Data from “accelerometers” (motion sensors) they wore on the hip for 7 consecutive days, except during their sleep phases. No participant had cancer at the time of recruitment and the data were analyzed a few years later, between 2009 and 2013. After a 5-year follow-up, 268 participants had died from cancer .

30 minutes is enough

Conclusion? The most sedentary participants had an 82% higher risk of death from cancer than the most active. In detail, the researchers estimated that replacing half an hour of sitting time with moderate physical activity such as cycling was associated with a 31% lower risk of death from cancer. When the activity is of low intensity, like walking for example, this risk decreases by 8%.

“My patients always start by telling me they don’t have time for physical activity,” said Susan Gilchrist, lead author of the study. “I tell them it starts with standing for 5 minutes every hour at work, or taking the stairs instead of the elevator. It may not seem like much, but this study shows that even low activity has benefits in the face of cancer mortality. ”
