Canceled, maintained or postponed? The guide to festivals in the time of the coronavirus

Dance, music, theater, cinema … The specter of the coronavirus hangs over the cultural events of the summer. While the Minister of Culture Franck Riester announced Monday, April 6 the creation of a support unit, the organizers are expressing their concern and are considering several alternatives to avoid a catastrophic scenario. But the announcements of Emmanuel Macron, April 1, came to shower many hopes. The head of state said that “major festivals and events with large audiences cannot be held until at least mid-July” The most unhappy could not avoid the cancellation, the pragmatists think of the postponement while the most optimistic still believe in the maintenance. Until when ? Le Figaro takes stock of the situation.

Bourges Spring

Canceled – From April 21 to 26 in Bourges

The first event to impose parity within its programming, the Printemps de Bourges is also the first major meeting which will not take place in 2020. The event, which had gathered 200,000 festival-goers last year, awaited Catherine Ringer, Alain Souchon, M, Suzane, Philippe Katerine and Roméo Elvis for its 44th edition.

Pursuant to government decisions, the 44th edition of Printemps de Bourges Crédit Mutuel scheduled for April 21 to 26, 2020 is canceled“, Said the organizers from March 13 and the ban on gatherings of more than 100 people. “The festival would like to thank its public for its support as well as the artists, partners, speakers and technicians who participated in the development of this edition. We will communicate the procedures to follow for the reimbursement of tickets in the coming days on our social networks and our website.“, They said.

Chaumont Gardens Festival

Postponed – From April 23 to November 1 in Chaumont-sur-Loire

In the middle of a 32 hectare park, the Chaumont International Garden Festival presents each year around twenty plots entrusted to gardeners and landscapers. For the moment, the gardeners and teams still present are striving to advance the projects, which have as their theme “Return to mother earth”. In 2019, the festival welcomed 530,000 visitors, and generated hundreds of jobs locally.

If the date of April 23 seems compromised, Chaumont can still count on the summer, even the late season. “We did not think for a second to cancel, and we are doing everything to be able to open in early May”, says Chantal Colleu-Dumont, director of the field.

Barn spring

Canceled – From May 8 to 10 in Evian-les-Bains (Haute-Savoie)

Inaugurated two years ago, this new appointment dedicated to the piano takes place every year in the enchanting setting of the Barn at the Lake. Nestled in the Evian Resort, this wooden room was designed by the architect Patrick Bouchain for the cellist Mstislav Rostropovitch, at the request of the president of BSN Antoine Riboud. Since 2014, the 1,200-seat auditorium has been revived, thanks in particular to the restructuring of Musical meetings of Evian, every year in July. If the latter, which will take place from July 4 to 11, are maintained, the spring festival was canceled on April 10 by way of a press release. In particular, he should have welcomed the Chinese star Yuja Wang for two concerts.

“No postponement of the festival is possible due to the impossibility of meeting the necessary conditions at a later date (crossed schedules of all the artists concerned by this edition and availability of the site or of all of the partners of the ‘event)’, the organizers said in the press release. Ticket holders are offered either an exchange for the summer festival or a refund.

Cannes film festival

Postponed – From May 12 to 23 in Cannes

To date, the 73rd edition of the event dedicated to the seventh art and chaired by the American director Spike Lee has been postponed to the beginning of the summer. In a press release published in mid-March, the organizers explained that they were thinking about holding the festival in late June or early July.

“Today, we have made the following decision: the Cannes Film Festival cannot be held on the dates scheduled, from May 12 to 23. Several hypotheses are being studied in order to preserve their progress, the main one of which would be a simple postponement, in Cannes, end of June – beginning of July 2020 ”, says the press release. “As soon as the evolution of the French and international health situation allows us to assess the real possibility, we will make our decision known”, he specifies. If it was impossible to postpone the event, the general delegate Thierry Frémaux announced that it was out of the question to organize a digital edition.

The Spring of the actors

Canceled – From May 29 to June 27 in Montpellier

The theater and live performance festival which brings together an average of 40,000 spectators per year in Montpellier awaited this year notably directors Romeo Castellucci, Krzysztof Warlikowski, Joël Pommerat, Julien Gosselin.

“The exceptional health situation we face (…) forces us to make difficult decisions”, stressed in a press release published Tuesday, April 7 the team of this festival chaired by the author Jean-Claude Carrière and directed by Jean Varela. “In view of the scale of the epidemic, we believe that we must act responsibly to protect the public and the large number of people required for the festival from any risk of contamination”, continues the press release. “It is with great sadness that we resolved this decision”, adds the team.

Saint-Denis Festival

Postponed – Initially from June 2 to July 2

Major meeting in June for music lovers in the Ile-de-France, the event takes place every year in the Basilica of the Kings of France as well as at the Legion of Honor for small forms. We hear both the choral and symphonic formations of Radio France as well as world-famous conductors and soloists, in a program ranging from oratorio to chamber music to world music. This year were expected Yo Yo Ma, Neeme Järvi or Angélique Kidjo. Following the announcements of Emmanuel Macron on July 13, the demonstration said to be doing everything possible for a postponement in Saint-Denis in the fall of 2020.

Nights of Fourvière

Canceled – From June 2 to July 31 in Lyon

The interdisciplinary festival should welcome this year Stephan Eicher, Alain Souchon, Pomme and Francis Cabrel among others. Nearly 200,000 visitors came to attend its concerts, shows and other performances last year, a record attendance for the event. Dominique Delorme, who did not want “give up”, announced the cancellation of the demonstration the day after Emmanuel Macron’s announcements, Monday, April 13.

We love green

Canceled – From June 6 to 7 in Paris-Vincennes

The We Love Green festival in Paris, scheduled for June 6 and 7, was canceled due to the health crisis linked to the pandemic and its organizers are meeting in 2021. Lana Del Rey, Catherine Ringer and Lomepal were the heads of poster of this environmentally conscious event, which welcomed 80,000 festival-goers last year. The organizers thought of postponing until September before “Make it obvious”. “The health risks are still too great and uncertain for the safety of our festival-goers.” Beyond “Substantial financial difficulties” caused by the cancellation, WLG recalls “That it is decidedly urgent (…) to take care of the world, essential to preserve our resources and our biodiversity to protect the health of all by rethinking our lifestyles”.

The tickets purchased remain valid for 2021 (June 5 and 6). “Otherwise you can also join the #billetsolidaire movement by donating your ticket to the festival, in support of culture, this will give us the strength to overcome this storm”, write the officials. Repayment terms will also be communicated shortly.

Festival of Saint-Michel in Thiérache

Maintained – From June 7 to July 5 in Saint-Michel (Aisne)

With 6000 spectators each year, the baroque music festival of the North of France has become in thirty-four editions an essential meeting for all lovers of ancient music. From the Arts Florissants to the Pygmalion ensemble, it regularly hosts the cream of French Baroque ensembles. This year, Les Talens lyriques, Les Musiciens de Saint-Julien and the young ensemble I Gemelli are expected.

Jean-Michel Verneiges, director: “I think that today the situation in the country calls for remaining modest. Our hope is that things will get better for everyone’s health first. And then that we can of course hold the festivals. In Saint-Michel, we only play on Sundays. If rallies were still banned in June, we can hope that the first two Sundays in July allow us to welcome the public. Reductions in gauges are also possible. “

Meslay Barn Festival

Canceled – From June 12 to 21 in Parçay-Meslay (Indre-et-Loire)

Sviatoslav Richter himself fell in love with this old tithe barn, located a stone’s throw from Tours, in 1964. The acoustics have since been improved, but the barn, which has lost none of its charm, has been welcoming for 56 years , one of the first major piano festivals of the season. The programming is now provided by René Martin (the founder of the Folle Journée de Nantes).

Noirlac Crossings

Maintained – From June 13 to July 11 in Bruère-Allichamps (Cher)

40 km from Bourges, Noirlac Abbey houses a Cistercian vault under its Cultural Meeting Center where music reigns supreme. For more than ten years, Crossings testify to the vitality of the center (which welcomes more than 25,000 spectators each year), and its opening, with a program articulated in five Saturdays of three concerts each, where all eras and all aesthetics are generally represented. This year, the well-known ensembles of music lovers La Tempête, Le Banquet Céleste and Contrastes are also expected, as are the folk singers Noëmi Waysfeld and Rosemary Standley.

Paul Fournier, director, president of France Festivals: “The coming weeks will be very important for the future. But while being lucid about the situation, we think that the festivals will perhaps be the first cultural operators to maneuver after the deconfinement, to welcome the public and artists who will have a mad desire to play. We therefore feel responsible towards this audience as well as the cultural milieu. The heterogeneity of the events in our country, which is the richness of our festivals, allows us to envisage multiple possible scenarios. We are also delighted that the Ministry of Culture, by creating its support unit, has taken note of this heterogeneity. Under the Crossings, we continue to work by considering different options. With gauges ranging from 150 to 450 people, it would be possible to adapt fairly easily to the gauge restrictions. If we had to start the festival later, we could also adapt our economy by choosing not to mount the biggest stages. “

France Festivals sent on April 9, a open letter to the Minister of Culture welcoming the establishment of the festival support unit, but calling for “Keep dreaming” in transparency and concerted action.

Solydays

Canceled – From June 19 to 21 in Paris

“Love is the answer.” But love cannot do everything. The 21st edition of the great Parisian music festival, created in 1999 at the request of Solidarité SIDA, will not take place. Luc Barruet, its organizer, announced the decision that many feared at the Parisian Sunday 12 evening. “It was with great emotion that we made the decision to cancel the 2020 edition of Solidays. It has never happened since its creation, except one day because of a storm in 2000. I am in shock ”, explains the president of Solidarité Sida. The event, which each year breaks attendance records, had welcomed more than 228,000 festival-goers and its 3 millionth spectator in 2019, thanks, in particular, to very attractive prices and a gold poster. To celebrate the summer, Solidays was to welcome this year Sean Paul, PNL, Laurent Garnier, Black Eyed Peas, Aya Nakamura, Justice or Last Train.

Hellfest

Canceled – From June 19 to 21 in Clisson (Loire-Atlantique)

The metal high mass was to host for its 2020 edition the Californian groups Deftones, Korn and System of a Down. It had received nearly 180,000 festival-goers last year.

The Hellfest team announced the cancellation in a statement released Wednesday, April 8. “The more the days passed, the more it seemed impossible to us to envisage a 2020 edition guaranteeing a satisfactory organization, and, most important: your security. Realizing that the risk of contagion linked to Covid-19 will still be high in June, it would have been irresponsible and dangerous to allow tens of thousands of fans – shirtless and thirsty for beer – to gather in a perimeter that did not allow for respect the necessary social distancing. The authorities also told us that they were no longer able to put in place the usual security and rescue devices (police, emergency doctors, first aiders, etc.) necessary for any large gathering like ours. ” The next meeting is already set for June 18, 19 and 20, 2021.

Marseille Festival

Canceled – From June 19 to July 9 in Marseille

The news fell Tuesday afternoon, the day after Emmanuel Macron’s announcements. The 25th edition of the Marseille Festival was in turn canceled. Festival-goers were expected at the Criée theater to discover the works of Dada Masilo, Alain Platel and Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, three major figures in world dance, from Europe and Africa who will be on the program for this 25th edition.

Isabelle Janco, director of communication: “The festival, which takes place in June, was to celebrate its 25th anniversary with the opening of a creation by Dada Masilo. Confined to South Africa, the choreographer will not be able to repeat it. Led by Jan Gaussens, the Marseille event was also to host a number of music, theater and dance companies linked to the Africa2020 season postponed due to the Covid-19. ”

Orange Choregies

Canceled – From June 19 to August 1 in Orange

The organizers of the Chorégies d’Orange (Vaucluse), the oldest festival in France, announced on Wednesday the cancellation of the 2020 edition, scheduled from June 19 to August 1, due to the health crisis. “Particular attention will be paid to the artists, technicians, permanent and intermittent workers who are the soul of this festival»Of lyrical art, announce in a press release the president of the Provence Alpes-Côte d’Azur region Renaud Muselier and the artistic director Jean-Louis Grinda.

Montpellier Dance

Postponed – From June 20 to July 8 in Montpellier

Each year, this contemporary dance festival, one of the largest in Europe, attracts between 50,000 and 60,000 spectators in the Hérault. For this 40th edition, the Montpellier Danse Festival was to present the creations of Emanuel Gat, Bouchra Ouizguen or Fabrice Ramalingom. No question, therefore, for Jean-Paul Montanari to cancel the demonstration. Monday evening, after Emmanuel Macron’s announcements, he explained that he was preparing to postpone his festival in the fall. Between September and November.

Jean-Paul Montanari, director and founder: “Today, Emanuel Gat has written 20% of his creation, Robin Orlyn has to rehearse in June in Johannesburg. Regarding the pieces already created, like that of Ohad Naharin for the Bastheva, it is not known if the borders will be open. We have established all kinds of possibilities, from the normal course to a lace festival. These uncertainties handicap the artists and have repercussions on the 2020-21 season of all theaters in France. The plays created during the festivals are the ones that theaters present during their season. ”

Jazz in Vienna

Canceled – From June 25 to July 11 in Vienne (Isère)

About 200,000 were expected in Isère for this 40th edition which programs the British Massive Attack on its big stage. Despite the work of the fifteen employees and 200 volunteers of the festival, 70% self-funded by the sale of tickets, the festival is canceled.

Benjamin Tanguy, programmer (at France Bleu microphone): “Given the health situation in France, the evolution, the risks that we could have taken at the festival, it was logical. We are obviously disappointed, very sad but it was the right decision to take to ban gatherings with large audiences, so we take note of it (…) We have the desire, we have the energy. We want to delve into 2021, to really say that we are really going to celebrate this fortieth anniversary for the year of forty years. We had a lot of projects for this summer, a lot of creations that took several years to design to bring artists together on the same stage. We will therefore plunge back very quickly into the creation of the 2021 program.

Days off at the Philharmonie de Paris

Canceled – From June 27 to July 7 in Paris

Sad anniversary for the Days Off, a festival launched by the Cité de la Musique and the Philharmonie de Paris which was to celebrate its ten years of existence. The eclectic program, ranging from pop to rock through electro and minimalist music, is the image of the institution which is always more open to the widest audience. And the festival completed its offer with a selection of concerts and activities for children this year. But the organizers had to resolve to cancel on Wednesday due to the health crisis and the ban on rallies.

Aix-en-Provence lyric art festival

Canceled – From June 30 to July 18 in Aix-en-Provence

The Aix lyric art festival cancels and it is a shock. Since the announcements of Emmanuel Macron on Monday, Pierre Audi, the director of the event, has tried everything to save the festival. But he had to face the facts and it was very emotional that he confirmed the inevitable at Figaro. No spectator will be able to attend the performances. Nor at Wozzeck edited by Mac Burney and directed by Simon Rattle, nor at Cosi fan tutte edited by Dimitri Tcherniakov and directed by Thomas Hengelbrock, nor at Coq d’Or by Barrie Kosky, directed by Aziz Shokhakimov. Also no Coronation of Poppea imagined by Ted Huffman and directed by Leonardo Garcia Alarcon, orInnocence, creation of Katia Saariaho directed by Susanna Malki and directed by Simon Stone. The entire program marked by a selection of titles, chefs and directors promised to bring together full rooms on exciting proposals. The public, moreover, had jumped on the ticket office.

The Eurockéennes

Canceled – From July 2 to 4 in Belfort

DJ Snake, Simple Mind, Massive Attack, Foals, Paul Kalkbrenner and Vald were the headliners of this 32 edition, which the organizers wanted “in XXL format” Some 130,000 festival-goers were expected on the Malsaucy peninsula, with rock, electro and urban music sounds.

Jean Paul Roland, director of the festival, waited for the president’s speech on Monday April 13 before canceling this 32nd edition. “For 2020 ticket holders, ticket refund terms will be specified on Monday“Added the organizers in a statement.

The Avignon Festival

Canceled – From July 3 to 23 in Avignon

The 74th edition of the Avignon Festival will not take place this summer. The press release fell Monday evening in the wake of the televised address by the President of the Republic, Emmanuel Macron specifying that the “major festivals and events with large audiences cannot be held until at least mid-July“Olivier Py, Paul Rondin and the Festival d’Avignon teams took note of the declarations of the President of the Republic of April 13, 2020, said the press release. The conditions are no longer met today for the 74th edition to be held from July 3 to 23, 2020. The management of the Festival d’Avignon will submit a cancellation plan to the approval of the board of directors of the Avignon Festival Management Association on Monday April 20, 2020. We shared hope as long as it was allowed, but the situation requires another scenario. Our duty is now to preserve and invent the future of the Avignon Festival. ”

At the microphone of France Inter, April 8, Olivier Py said to himself “worried but not completely pessimisticAbout the holding of the biggest theater festival in the world. “SIf the deconfinement does not intervene in the second half of May, it will be difficult to organize a festival“, He warned. Explaining that it was his responsibility to “keep this possibility as long as possible because it would be an incredible lack of courage to throw in the towel today ” and that a cancellation “would jeopardize countless international companies and the city’s economy

The Francofolies

Canceled – From July 10 to 14 in La Rochelle

This year, beautiful headliners made up the program for the 36th edition: PNL, Mika, Alain Souchon, Yael Naim and even Philippe Katerine were expected on the stage of the emblematic festival of La Rochelle.

On April 14, the organizers finally decided to cancel the event after the President of the Republic declared the day before. A postponement to the fall was not possible, the difficulty being to find common dates for the 63 artists expected. The 36th edition will therefore finally take place in 2021, on the same dates. As for the programmed musicians, the festival hopes to reunite them again next year. “For 2020 ticket holders, we will come back to you very soon with different solutions”, specifies the press release.

Radio France Occitanie Montpellier Festival

Maintained – From July 10 to 30

Created in 1985 on the initiative of Georges Frêche and the president of the time of Radio France (Jean-Noël Jeanneney), the manifstation ‘is imposed as the first big meeting of classical music in July in the South of France (excluding lyrics). Cradle of many rediscoveries, welcoming more than 100,000 spectators for some 150 events (including several outside of Montpellier), the festival dedicated this year to music in the Mediterranean should have started on July 10 in the region. The first concert planned for Montpellier takes place on July 15.

Jean-Pierre Rousseau, artistic director. “For the moment, our line has not changed: the festival will take place as long as it can take place. It would be presumptuous for me to make plans on the comet as if I knew more than the President of the Republic himself, when we have three months before the festival begins. For the few dates we had in the region before July 14, I am currently studying the possibility of postponements. The situation of the Radio France Occitanie Montpellier festival is very different from that of Avignon or the Nuits de Fourvière. The majority of our major concerts in Montpellier take place at the Corum, we have no specific technical editing constraints, and I would technically be able to cancel even a week before. However, the date set by the president in mid-July leaves us with a lot of uncertainty. This year we do not have artists or extra-European orchestras but orchestras from Italy or Spain, and we do not know if they will be able to circulate. We know nothing about the possible reception conditions for the public. A maintenance with reductions of gauges is naturally possible as long as they are not completely stunted. We will also be consulting with the Chorégies d’Orange and the La Roque d’Anthéron festival, which we are close to. I study absolutely all the possible scenarios in order to submit them in the next fortnight to our partners and co-funders … Even that of a symbolic maintenance with some dates behind closed doors, without audience, filmed for television and retransmitted to the radio. One thing is certain: we will not make any hasty decisions. Even if it seems to me that the date of April 30 is a reasonable deadline for choosing one or the other of these scenarios. “

The Old Plows

Canceled – From July 16 to 19 in Carhaix (Finistère)

It took the Vieilles Charrues two days to turn around. Jérôme Trehorel, director of the biggest festival of the summer, announced his cancellation on Wednesday, 48 hours after the presidential announcement concerning the festivals. The costs already incurred by the festival amount to “7 million euros”, mainly in artist fees. “We are in discussions with the producers of artists to postpone these commitments to 2021”, said the director of the event. The Vieilles Charrues were to welcome Angèle, DJ Snake, Lenny Kravitz, but also Céline Dion, “Biggest seal in the history of plows”, says its director.

Lollapalooza Paris

Canceled – From July 18 to 18 in Paris

A hexagonal version of the festival created in the United States at the time of the explosion of grunge, the Lollapalooza Paris has welcomed some 100,000 spectators since 2017.

The organizers announced Friday April 10 the cancellation of its 2020 edition on the event site. The event indicates that the tickets purchased remain valid for next year. More information will be given later on the festival networks. The event already announces its dates for 2021 on Saturday July 17 and Sunday 18. Pearl Jam, veteran group of grunge, which has just released the exciting Gigaton, scheduled this summer at “Lolla”, is already scheduled as headlining in a year.

Vaison Dances

Maintained – From July 19 to 29 in Vaison-la-Romaine (Vaucluse)

With its 10,000 spectators of its 2018 edition (twice as much as the previous one), the Vaucluse festival had planned six shows, unlike the five usually scheduled.

Pierre François Heuclin, artistic director: “It is too early to make an arbitrary decision that would be hasty and unjust. The 2020 edition can still take place, we are all working on it. Artistically everything is ready. There may be some artistic adjustments to make because the first two shows were creations. We will find solutions adapted to the difficulties of the companies. The problems of postponing the opening dates of the ticket office, the setting up of the stage can be resolved, because there are always solutions to logistical problems. It’s just a question of political and health decision linked to the date and the implementation of the deconfinement. ”

La Roque d’Anthéron Piano Festival

Maintained – From July 20 to August 18 at La Roque d’Anthéron (Bouches-du-Rhône)

A true Mecca of the piano in the south of France, the event, which welcomes 75,000 spectators for concerts under the stars every year, a program by soloists from around the world. From young shoots (Alexandre Kantorow, gold medal in the Tchaikovsky competition, almost made his debut there) to the big names on the international scene, all have their habits on the stage specially mounted on the pond in the park of the Château de Florans. Adorned with an acoustic conch masterfully redone in 2007, it faces 2000 seats, available in the temporary stands, which require several weeks of assembly.

René Martin, director: “For the moment, there is no question of canceling. But we decided to start only on July 24 instead of 17. The prospect of an edition only for the month of August is not excluded if we could not welcome the public in July. As for the interpreters, we do not know if air traffic will be restored enough, or if visas will be granted, and on time. I remain optimistic. But if it were not the case, the French pianistic scene seems sufficiently rich to me to be able to envisage, even at the last minute, a 100% French edition. Especially since many young performers are waiting for their hand to be extended. Naturally, we will be very vigilant about health security conditions. Space the public, leaving an empty space between each spectator … Maximize the different spaces and scenes in Florans park, but also in La Roque d’Anthéron, such as the chapel … Rethink the traffic circuits to avoid queues, and to make the public cross in lesser proportions … These are scenarios that we are studying, while waiting to see more clearly. “

Bayonne festivals

Maintained – From July 29 to August 2

Officially, nothing has yet been decided. The Bayonne festivals, which bring together hundreds of thousands of people every year in the streets of the city are still scheduled for late July. But the mayor Jean-René Etchegaray conceals his doubts less and less. “There is a lot of evidence to suggest that the Bayonne Festival is seriously compromised this summer, he said on April 10, according to remarks reported by South West.

Bruno Messina, directeur artistique. “
