Canada to Recognize Palestinian State in September
Canada intends to recognize the state of Palestine during the United Nations General Assembly in September in New York. Prime Minister Mark Carney announced the policy change on Wednesday,July 30,2025,stating it is necessary to preserve the hope of a two-state solution.
“Canada intends to recognize the state of Palestine during the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly,” Carney said at a press conference. This move follows similar intentions announced by France and the United Kingdom in recent days.
Israel instantly rejected the initiative, labeling it part of a “distorted campaign of international pressure.” The Israeli embassy in Ottawa stated that recognizing a Palestinian State without a responsible government, functional institutions, or benevolent leadership “rewards and legitimates the monstrous barbarism of Hamas on october 7, 2023.” The Israeli offensive in Gaza was launched after Hamas militants attacked Israel on October 7, 2023. Hamas is considered a terrorist organization by the European Union and several other nations.
The decision echoes similar statements from France, whose President Emmanuel Macron’s intention to recognize a Palestinian State also drew condemnation from Israel, which called the decision a reward for terrorism. U.S. President Donald Trump deemed the move needless.
Carney explained that Canada’s decision stems from its “entrenched” conviction in a two-state solution for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, which has persisted for over seven decades. “That possibility of a solution of two states is eroding before our eyes,” he stated.
The prime minister highlighted Israel’s “continuous failure” to prevent a humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza amidst its war with Hamas. He also pointed to the expansion of settlements in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem.
“for decades, (a solution of two states) was expected to be reached as part of a peace process based on a negotiated agreement between the Israeli government and the Palestinian authority,” Carney said. “Regrettably, this approach is no longer lasting,” he added.
