Canada floods claim fourth life, search for fifth victim

The landslides happened Monday after the area was ravaged by heavy rainfall. About 100 millimeters of rain fell in one day. A highway was buried under a load of mud and stones.

The first victim was found on Monday, the other three were found on Wednesday and Thursday. A fifth victim is still being sought.

Residents of British Columbia have been hit hard by the heavy rainfall. “We have nowhere to go,” says one of them:

The government has banned non-essential travel in British Columbia. Filling stations are only allowed to sell a limited amount of petrol in order to tackle shortages.

Thousands evacuated

Thousands of people had to be evacuated earlier this week. For example, all more than 7,000 residents of the town of Merritt were ordered to leave. The massive evacuation is necessary, among other things, because clean drinking water can no longer be supplied.

In Abbotsford, near Vancouver, more than 100 homes were evacuated in neighborhoods threatened by mudslides and flooding.
