The rise in crossings is believed to be driven, in part, by U.S.-born children with parents residing in the U.S.without legal status, seeking refuge in Canada. While U.S. law grants automatic citizenship to those born within its borders, former President Trump had attempted to alter these provisions. The Safe Third country Agreement excludes U.S. citizens from claiming asylum in Canada.
As of this year, a total of 1,125 people have been apprehended attempting to enter Canada illegally from the U.S. and have been repatriated. U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has not yet responded to requests for comment regarding the situation.
