Makes the skin thicker
The study shows that when vitamin C is applied to the skin (skin models), the number of keratinocytes increases, they want to say the cells that build up the skin’s protective barrier. Speeds up cell division
The underlying mechanism is a process called DNA Demethylation. Vitamin C helps to “awaken” genes that control the growth of skin, which causes the cells to divide faster and the skin to become thicker and healthier.
“We found that vitamin C helps to thick the skin by encouraging keratinocyte proliferation via DNA demethyllation, making it a promising treatment for thin skin, especially in older adults,” says Ishigami.
The study, which was published in Journal of Investigative Dermatologyexamined the effect of topical vitamin C, ie when applied directly to the skin and not via supplements.
Earth.com writes that these findings indicate that vitamin can strengthen thin or aging skin. It works by resuming growth routes that decrease with age. It reactivates genes and supports cellular reconstruction at the molecular level.
