Can Eating Avocado Really Lower the Risk of Cardiovascular Disease?

Recent studies reveal the benefits of eating avocados for the risk of cardiovascular disease.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — There is a delicious way to reduce risk heart disease and blood vessels. According to research, eating avocado twice or more a week can prevent the risk of cardiovascular disease and coronary heart disease.

In a study published in Journal of American Heart Association on Wednesday (30/3/2022), the research team stated the benefits of consuming avocado. According to researchers, replacing margarine, butter, eggs, yogurt, cheese, and processed meats with avocados is also beneficial for the heart.

The study examined data from more than 68,000 women from the Nurses’ Health Study and more than 41,000 men from the Health Professionals Follow-up Study who were free of cancer, coronary heart disease, and stroke. Diet was assessed using a questionnaire at baseline and then periodically every four years.

A total of 14,274 incident cardiovascular disease cases, including 9,185 coronary heart disease events and 5,290 strokes, were documented during 30 years of follow-up. After adjusting for lifestyle and other dietary factors, consumers who ate avocados two or more times a week appeared to have a 16 percent lower risk of cardiovascular disease.

They also had a 21 percent lower risk of coronary heart disease. That’s when compared to people who don’t eat avocados.

Reported Fox News, Friday (1/4/2022), there was no significant relationship between these eating patterns and stroke. Meanwhile, replacing half a daily serving of margarine, butter, eggs, yogurt, cheese or processed meat with an equivalent amount of avocado was associated with a 16 to 22 percent lower risk of cardiovascular disease.
