Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 beta test dates have been revealed, giving PlayStation fans something to get excited about, but leaving Xbox gamers a bit cold.
Ahead of its October release date, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will be playable across two open beta weekends. According to Activision (opens in new tab), the trailer will allow players to try out a handful of maps, modes, and weapons, as well as other “innovations and surprises.” Various rewards will also be unlockable and will carry over to the full game upon release.
The first beta test will run from September 18-20, but is only available to PS5 and PS4 players. If you pre-order the game on a PlayStation system, you’ll be able to participate even earlier, on September 16. Activision has confirmed that an active PS Plus subscription is not required to participate.
The second beta test will take place between September 24 and 26, and is open to players on PlayStation, Xbox and PC. PlayStation players will be able to participate from September 22, as well as those who have pre-ordered the game for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One or PC. If you’re on Xbox, an Xbox Live Gold or Xbox Game Pass subscription will be required to participate. However, the beta will support cross-play, so you can play with your friends on all systems.

How to sign up for the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 beta
—
The easiest way to get a seat in the upcoming Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 beta tests is to pre-order the game. Once you do, Activision will email you a beta code that you can redeem at is online portal (opens in new tab).
But you don’t have to spend the money yet. Activision previously gave away beta codes during the Call of Duty Championship broadcast on August 7, and says it will continue to offer “more opportunities to receive Early Access beta codes” in the coming weeks.
Expect more codes to be given away on September 15 when Activision hosts its Call of Duty: Next showcase. Billed as a major franchise event during which “the future of Call of Duty will be revealed,” we can expect to hear more details about Modern Warfare 2, Call of Duty: Warzone 2, and the battle royale’s mobile spinoff.
PlayStation gamers will get a special deal for the upcoming Modern Warfare 2 beta due to Sony and Activision’s long-standing exclusivity agreement. However, Sony won’t enjoy that exclusivity deal forever. If Microsoft’s proposed acquisition of Activision Blizzard goes through, the Xbox owner will take over the Call of Duty license.
Microsoft states that it will honor existing agreements between Activision and Sony, but it is likely that some content will become exclusive to Xbox gamers in the future, much like Starfield became Xbox exclusive after Microsoft bought Bethesda.
