California Voters Approve New Congressional maps, Signal Likely Removal of Poway Councilmember
SAN DIEGO – California voters have approved Proposition 50 to establish new congressional district maps for the 2026, 2028, and 2030 elections, while early results indicate strong support for the recall of Poway City Councilmember Tony Blain. NBC 7 San Diego is tracking the latest results from the San Diego County Registrar of Voters.
Proposition 50, projected to pass by the NBC News Decision Desk Tuesday night, aims to redraw congressional districts, perhaps erasing up to five Republican districts in California and serving as a countermeasure to redistricting efforts in Republican strongholds.
In Poway City Council District 2, voters were asked to decide whether Councilmember Blain, currently facing felony charges in San Diego County, should remain in office or be removed through a recall election. A simple majority – 50% +1 of the vote – is required for removal.
With 37.3% of precincts reporting, the recall is currently leading with 80.95% voting yes to remove Blain and 19.05% voting No to keep him in office, according to the San Diego County Registrar of Voters.
Initial results were released shortly after 8 p.m., encompassing mail ballots received before Election Day and early voting from vote centers. A second update arrived around 10 p.m., including ballots cast at vote centers on Election Day. Remaining mail-in ballots will be tabulated in the coming days, the Registrar confirmed.
Official results are pending certification, with the Registrar of Voters having until December 2nd to complete the process.
