California Anti-Gender Separation Act

A law introduced in California seeks to end stereotypes and prejudices in the choice of toys. If approved, stores will be charged a $ 1,000 fine.

In progress

The California assembly will evaluate this bill that what it seeks is that in the stores there is a section that does not have gender marketing. That is to say, that different toys are available and that the child is not subject to prejudice when choosing.

Evan Lowe, the MP who proposed the law, said he did so because one of his employees told him that his daughter wanted an article from the children’s section, but felt it was not due because it was in the children’s section.

As he argued, this has always happened and makes it difficult for consumers to compare products. Added to that, it implies that the use by one of the genders is inappropriate.

Insist on the law

Lowe had already done it last year without much success and said, on that occasion, that he would continue to insist. This, since what this initiative seeks is not important because it addresses perceived social laws, but it also guarantees that gender prejudices and judgments do not play such an important role in the lives of our children.

Additionally, the bill comes amid a growing backlash to gender-specific toys and clothing. Groups such as the international “Let Toys Be Toys” campaign argue that such products perpetuate entrenched gender stereotypes and can leave children feeling embarrassed if they don’t conform to them.
