Bears QB Caleb Williams Faces Scrutiny After Practice Footage Emerges
Chicago bears rookie quarterback Caleb Williams is drawing criticism following the circulation of a video from a recent practice session at Halas Field in Lake Forest, Illinois. The footage, shared widely on social media, appears to show Williams struggling with accuracy during drills.
Williams concluded his first NFL season with a 5-12 record as the Bears finished last in the NFC North division. Despite the team’s overall struggles, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft demonstrated individual flashes of potential, accumulating 3,541 passing yards and 20 touchdowns across 17 games. His pass completion percentage stood at 62.5%, and he added 489 rushing yards to his stat line.
However,Williams faced meaningful pressure throughout his rookie year, being sacked a league-leading 68 times. This total was a substantial 16 sacks more than CJ Stroud of the Houston Texans, who endured the second-highest sack count in the league with 52.
The Bears organization has actively addressed concerns about Williams’ protection heading into the 2025 season. In the offseason,Chicago acquired veteran guards Joe Thuney, previously with the Kansas City Chiefs, and Jonah Jackson, formerly of the Detroit Lions, via trades. They also reached an agreement with center Drew Dalman, a former third-round pick from the 2022 draft, to further solidify the offensive line. These moves represent a $75 million investment in the offensive line, according to Spotrac.
Williams, a standout player during his collegiate career at the University of Southern California, will be looking to reduce the number of sacks he concedes and build upon his rookie statistics as he enters his second season. The Bears’ coaching staff, led by head coach Matt Eberflus, will be closely monitoring his growth throughout the upcoming training camp and preseason.
