Calculating the Time Difference between France and the United States during Summer Time

The Daylight Savings Time Puzzle

To illustrate the difficulty of calculating the time difference between France and the United States, let’s imagine a funny little story.

Let’s say you live in France and that Jonathan, your traveler grandson, has decided to cross the United States from Los Angeles to New York, passing through the south of the country.

As your big boy is very attached to you, he has agreed (poor thing) to call you every day at the same time: 5 p.m. So you wait feverishly for his call.

Alas, the task will prove to be very complicated, because:

  • The US switches to summer time 15 days before France
  • Jonathan will change time zones three times during his journey
  • Arizona does not practice daylight saving time.

However, Jonathan’s trip takes place during the transition to summer time…

So I challenge you to calculate what time Jonathan should call his parents from Los Angeles (CA), Tusson (AZ), Santa Fe (NM), Amarillo (TX), Oklahoma City (OK) Little Rock (AK) and finally New York, so that they receive his call at 5 p.m. French time, including, in the city of your choice, the change to summer time in France

I admit to having spent a lot of time there, without finding a result that seems safe enough to put it online…

And you?
