LOS ANGELES – A California State University Channel Islands professor has been indicted by a federal grand jury on a felony charge of assaulting a federal agent, escalating a case stemming from a July 10, 2025, immigration raid on cannabis farms in Camarillo, California. Jeffrey Caravello, initially charged with a misdemeanor, is accused of throwing a tear gas canister at federal agents during a clash with protesters.
The incident unfolded during a raid by federal immigration officials on two southern California cannabis farms, sparking protests. According to court documents obtained by the Los Angeles Times, the protests escalated when rocks were thrown at government vehicles, prompting officers to deploy tear gas. Caravello allegedly threw a tear gas canister at the officers before leaving the scene, changing clothes, and returning two hours later.
Agents identified Caravello as the individual who threw the canister and took him into custody, alleging he resisted arrest. He was initially charged with felony assault on July 12, later reduced to a misdemeanor. Caravello pleaded guilty on August 25, telling the Ventura County Star, “Anything and everything I do at protests is to protect people.I would never intentionally harm anyone.”
However, the case was reviewed by a grand jury this week, resulting in the felony indictment.Caravello is currently free on a $15,000 bond and is expected to be arraigned in the United States District Court in Los Angeles, according to the Justice Department.
