Cabinet does not want education and childcare completely close to new corona wave

Phases of pandemic

In different scenarios, from dark green to red, the steps that education takes in different phases of the pandemic have been worked out. Even in the worst red scenario, some of the students still go to school or daycare. The other part receives digital distance education or is given homework. The students alternate.

The plan does not say anything about priority for teaching staff in a new round of vaccinations, according to the insiders. Health Minister Ernst Kuipers says that teachers are not given priority, because other professional groups would also want that. Kuipers thinks that would lower the vaccination rate after all.

Not happy

The General Education Association (AOb) says in a reaction that it is not happy with the plans. “It is non-committal,” said a spokeswoman. “No consequences with insufficient ventilation, no income protection for people with lung covid, no priority in vaccination. This is not a good plan.”

On Thursday, Minister Dennis Wiersma (Education) presented another 140 million euros for schools with ‘the most urgent ventilation situation’. The cabinet previously allocated 460 million euros to improve ventilation in schools.
