Cabinet comes up with plans for nuclear energy today, role of Eemshaven still unclear

Eemshaven in the picture for nuclear energy for thirty years
The fact that Eemshaven is mentioned as a possible location for a nuclear power station is certainly not new. As early as 1986, the northern harbor was identified as a potential location for nuclear energy generation.

It was the outcome of a study launched during the Den Uyl cabinet in 1976. The possibility of storing nuclear waste in salt domes in particular was a plus for Eemshaven. The fact that it was a sparsely populated area also played a role. In the end, the plans fell through: there was no support for nuclear energy among the Dutch population.
