It was the outcome of a study launched during the Den Uyl cabinet in 1976. The possibility of storing nuclear waste in salt domes in particular was a plus for Eemshaven. The fact that it was a sparsely populated area also played a role. In the end, the plans fell through: there was no support for nuclear energy among the Dutch population.
