By choice: Ataman makes a surprising promise

After her election in the Bundestag, the new Federal Anti-Discrimination Commissioner, Ferda Ataman, announced that she would support all people in the country who experience discrimination. “I would like to convince those who have not yet been able to place their trust in me with my work,” she said, referring to the vote in the Bundestag. There, 278 MPs had previously voted against them. However, Ataman had achieved the necessary majority with 376 votes.

“I see it as my task to support people who experience discrimination through advice, research and public relations with the Federal Anti-Discrimination Agency,” said the 42-year-old. One of the goals she named was a nationwide funding program to set up nationwide advice.

Federal Minister for Family Affairs Lisa Paus (Greens), whose house had proposed Ataman for the post, said: “I am firmly convinced that this is a very, very good choice.” Ataman is known as a committed person for an inclusive and democratic society.
