Button wins in legendary races, curious Villeneuve debut

(Motorsport-Total.com) – Jenson Button won a virtual legend race for a good cause on Easter Saturday. The 2009 world champion won in Sebring ahead of Juan Pablo Montoya and ex-touring car world champion Andy Priaulx, thereby donating $ 10,000 to a foundation of his choice.

“I was more nervous in this race than in real life,” the Briton is quoted by the Reuters news agency. “It probably comes from the fact that you have the feeling in every corner that you end up in the tire stack.”

The event organized by Torque Esports was attended by motorsport legends aged over 40 – including 73-year-old Emerson Fittipaldi.

But Jacques Villeneuve, who drove from sixth to the bottom of his virtual debut, caused a sensation. However, he did not do this with the usual structure with steering wheel and pedals, but with a commercially available gaming controller for home consoles.

Another race series raised even more money for a good cause on Saturday: Six Formula 1 stars and other drivers collected more than $ 33,000 in the new “Race for the World” series. This championship, organized by the drivers, aims to raise $ 100,000 for the World Health Organization in six races.

The series runs over three evenings this week and is completed on a 25 percent Grand Prix distance on a random route. Many drivers stream the races via their personal Twitch accounts.

Chaos in “Abu Dhabi”

Abu Dhabi started yesterday as the season opener, but quickly became chaos and had to be restarted because all the cars were accidentally hosted – as if they weren’t there.

Alexander Albon was in front of Renault junior Christian Lundgaard in pole position. Both also took the lead, while the field behind was involved in several incidents. Formula 2 driver Lundgaard overtook Albon during the pit stops and would have won the race if the drivers hadn’t decided to make their own safety car.

This caused a chaotic restart, in which Lundgaard was knocked off the slopes while Albon was able to win the race. Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois came second ahead of Arthur Leclerc.

In the second race at Silverstone, things went more smoothly. Lundgaard took pole, but Arthur Leclerc took the lead in Turn 1. And in the course of a defensive maneuver, Brother Charles was able to slip into second place.

Lundgaard was able to repeat second place and brought it home behind the younger Leclerc. The older man was only fifth behind Luca Albon and Lando Norris because he accidentally pulled on the hard tires instead of the media at the pit stop.

The next event will take place on Tuesday.
