Butcher chain Renmans denies closing 100 butcher shops | Interior

Butcher chain Renmans denies plans to close 80 to 100 butchers, as suggested by newspapers. Renmans would be affected by the start of the sale of fresh meat products by the Aldi department stores, in addition to which it invariably opens shops.

Unprofitable outlets were closed in consultation with Aldi. Since April 2020, the chain has closed 30 butcher shops and opened three more. But there is no longer any reason for a large number of closures. “There is always the possibility that we will close one or the other butcher shop. But under no circumstances do we intend to close 80 to 100 branches as reported by the press,” assures Rik Renmans, managing director of the butcher chain. “There are also plans to open more butcher shops in the coming years.” The new openings are mainly planned in consultation with discounter Aldi, but Renmans says some “independent projects” are also being considered.

Today Renmans has 265 butchers, most of which are affiliated with an Aldi store. Despite a few difficult years, the company is profitable, Renmans assures. Restructuring is out of the question.

The family business employs around 3,000 people.
