Bushwick tenants demand repairs after fires

Residents and community activists in defense of the tenants held a protest in Bushwick to demand that the landlord, Deodat ‘Rupert’ Lowtan, make repairs to a building affected by fires.

According to the My Home Is Not Your Home organization, Lowtan owns at least 39 properties in the Bushwick area and has been consistently rated one of the 20 worst landlords in the city.

Similarly, Lowtan has not offered any type of assistance to families affected by the fires, which occurred during 2020 under suspicious circumstances, according to some.

The families of the tenants consider that the landlord has purposely avoided carrying out the repairs to their homes as a tactic to force them to evacuate their property, because he has been trying to evict them for more than a decade.
