delhi-NCR Residents: Supreme Court Permits Firecrackers This Diwali, But With Strict Timings & Focus on “Green” Options
New Delhi - Diwali celebrations in Delhi-NCR will include firecrackers this year, following a recent Supreme Court directive, but residents are urged to exercise caution and adhere to permit timings to ensure a safe and enjoyable festival. The Court’s October 15th order, coupled with instructions from Delhi Police, outlines guidelines for cracker use during the festivities.
While the Supreme Court has allowed the bursting of firecrackers, the emphasis is on utilizing “green crackers” developed in response to dangerously high Air Quality Index (AQI) levels recorded in 2016 and 2017, which exceeded 500 – categorized as ‘severe’ or ‘hazardous’. These green crackers, created by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research-National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (CSIR-NEERI) following Supreme court intervention, emit approximately 30% less particulate matter than conventional firecrackers.
To ensure authenticity, consumers can identify green crackers in two ways: by scanning the unique QR code on the packaging using the ‘CSIR-NEERI Green QR Code’ mobile app, or by looking for the official Green Fireworks logo.
Authorities are encouraging conventional Diwali celebrations alongside responsible cracker use. As one official stated, “On this festival of lights, my heart is filled with joy and happiness for all of you.” Citizens are encouraged to light diyas, create rangoli, and share sweets.
With Delhi considered “family” by many, the hope is for a peaceful and harmonious Diwali, with a brighter future for all. However, residents are reminded to be mindful of permitted timings to avoid any disruptions during the festivities.
