Burma – Joint statement by G7 foreign ministers (03.02.2021)

We, the Foreign Ministers of Germany, Canada, the United States of America, France, Italy, Japan and the United Kingdom and the High Representative of the European Union, unanimously condemn the coup in Burma.

We are deeply concerned about the arrests of politicians and civil society activists, including the State Counselor, Ms. Aung San Suu Kyi, and the President, Mr. Win Myint, and the attacks on the hurry. We call on the military to immediately end the state of emergency, return power to the democratically elected government, release all those unjustifiably detained and respect human rights and the rule of law . The results of the November elections must be respected and parliament must be able to meet as soon as possible.

The restrictions imposed on information flows by the military are of great concern. The civilian population, including civil society and the press, must not be subject to any form of reprisal. We also call for unrestricted humanitarian access so that the most vulnerable can receive assistance.

The G7 foreign ministers recall their press release published in 2019, in which they reaffirmed their attachment to democratic transition, peace and the principle of accountability for human rights violations and abuses in Burma.

We stand alongside the Burmese people, who aspire to a democratic future.
