Buenos Aires – Argentina‘s opposition Peronist party achieved a notable win in Sunday’s legislative elections in teh crucial province of buenos Aires, placing President Javier Milei’s governing coalition in a clear second place, according to preliminary official results.
Axel Kicillof, the current governor of Buenos Aires Province and a leading figure within the center-left Justicialist Party (commonly known as the Peronist party), led the race, surpassing the candidate representing milei’s Libertarian Party. With 82.2% of votes tallied, the Peronists garnered 46.8% of the vote share, while Milei’s party secured 33.8%.
The outcome represents a notable challenge for President Milei, who has recently faced mounting scrutiny stemming from a bribery scandal and increasing public concern regarding government spending. The Buenos Aires election is considered a key indicator as Argentina heads into a critical election season that will likely determine the stability of Milei’s governance.
Despite the setback,Milei reaffirmed his commitment to his core libertarian policies following the proclamation of the results. “the course will not change, it will be redoubled,” he stated from the provincial headquarters of his freedom Advances coalition, emphasizing his administration’s focus on achieving fiscal balance, promoting economic openness, and controlling inflation.
