Buemi Reclaims Podium Finish After FIA Review

Jakarta E-Prix result adjusted following new evidence

A post-race penalty initially stripped Sébastien Buemi of Envision Racing of his podium place at the Jakarta E-Prix. However, fresh evidence presented to the FIA led to the reversal of the stewards’ decision, reinstating his third-place finish.

Key Development

The Envision Racing team presented footage from their car’s roll hoop camera, which had not been available immediately after the race. This new footage, according to the FIA, demonstrated that Buemi’s overtaking maneuver on Mahindra Racing’s Edo Mortara was legitimate and within the regulations.

An FIA statement clarified the amended decision, stating, “The driver of Car 16 argued that the New Element shows that his overtaking manoeuvre was legit, that he was always in control of his car and that when the slight contact between the two cars occurred, he was fully alongside Car 48.”

Mortara corroborated Buemi’s account, noting he barely felt the contact. The FIA stewards, upon review, determined that no single party bears whole or predominant responsibility for the collision.

Consequently, the original penalty assessed to Buemi, which included a five-second time penalty and one penalty point, was rescinded. According to a recent study, such decisions can significantly impact driver standings and team strategies (FIA.com).

Revised Outcome

The FIA statement concluded, Therefore, the Stewards decide to reverse the Decision 12. As a result the penalty (i.e. 5 second time penalty + 1 penalty point) on Car 16 is removed and the Stewards determine that no further action will be taken in relation to this collision.”
