Budget discussion still very tough, possibly still under Monday …

The negotiators of the seven parties that want to form a new federal government are still sitting around the table on Sunday evening looking for a coalition agreement. It seems unlikely that they will be able to complete their work completely during the night. After all, there is still a lot of trouble on the table with the budget work.

The presidents of liberals, socialists, greens and CD&V have now been intensively negotiating for days about a coalition agreement, which they want to have ready by Monday at the latest. The co-formators Paul Magnette (PS) and Alexander De Croo (Open VLD) must then report to the king. It is not yet clear when exactly they should do that. On Sunday morning Magnette spoke to VTM News about “Monday evening”.

Long negotiating hours are still waiting in the Egmont Palace. After discussing tax matters on Sunday, the budget work is still awaiting, so that a lot of previously agreed measures will eventually be put back on the table. The question is, for example, how the increase in minimum pensions requested by some parties will be financed and how this increase will be planned in concrete terms over time.

For the time being it is not clear whether the negotiators will go “to the finish” on Sunday night. They may meet on Monday to clarify the last things. These are not least about the division of powers between the various parties and the question of who will ultimately become prime minister. Walloon Prime Minister Elio Di Rupo said to RTL-Tvi that it would not be “unjustified” if the PS ask to be allowed to supply the prime minister, because the socialist family (PS and SP.A) is the largest political family. But Di Rupo did make nuances: “That is something else”, he responded to the question of whether the PS will effectively claim 16 rue de la Loi.

Beweging.net, the Christian workers’ movement, has responded positively to the formation of the Vivaldi coalition. “As movement.net, we are therefore in positive expectation of a government that is finally leaving the shadow of the elections behind and is fully focused on the issues of our country. We have learned for over 400 days that fear is a bad counselor. When these parties have the courage to join a government, they deserve credit at least for that, ”says chairman Peter Wouters in a message on the website ofeging.net.
