The bubble restriction is paying off. The downside is that the loose bubble of fifteen, as we knew it in July, is not coming back anytime soon. De Standaard, Het Nieuwsblad and Gazet van Antwerpen write this on Tuesday. But if the curve falls again, we can loosen up again, virologist Marc Van Ranst immediately adds.

Steven Van Gucht of Sciensano calls the drastic reduction of the bubble to only five new contacts per family “the main reason why we can now cap the increase”. “With the bubble of fifteen different contacts, we have gone too far.”

Proportional

Virologist Marc Van Ranst (KU Leuven) also argues in favor of maintaining “a restriction on our social contacts” for a long time to come. Until a vaccine is found, a restriction will continue to be necessary, “however difficult that may be”. Otherwise, the virus will have free rein, the scientists say. Only such a vaccine will probably not be available until mid-2021. Parties and major events for next year are therefore already on the kick seat, the newspapers conclude.

Nevertheless, Van Ranst also offers some hope. He emphasizes that the measures must remain “useful and proportional” in order to maintain support. “That is to say: if the curve falls again, we can be a bit looser again,” says the Leuven virologist. But not as loose as in July. “Because we have to keep the time span between two waves as long as possible.”
