Bromazolam, a dangerous drug, a public health problem in NB

In New Brunswick, the presence of bromazolam, a dangerous drug, is a public health concern. It has been detected in the blood samples of nine people whose sudden deaths are being investigated.

This was stated by the acting chief medical officer, Dr Yves Léger, in a press release on Friday. For public health, these are the first indications that this drug is being used in the province.

This is especially concerning because people are unaware that their illicit drugs contain it. There is no indication of the presence of bromazolam, as it cannot be detected by sight, smell or taste. There are no telltale signshe said.

The deaths in question occurred between July and November.

Public Health reports that, in some cases, fentanyl has also been detected in these blood samples.

Bromazolam is not approved for medical use in any country, and its use can lead to serious adverse effects, including death, especially when taken with opioids such as fentanyl, says New Brunswick Public Health.

According to Dr. Léger, taking benzodiazepines, such as bromazolam, with opioids increases the risk of overdose and death.

Naloxone does not fight the side effects of benzodiazepines.
