(CNN) – Broadway actor Nick Cordero is recovering after his right leg was amputated after complications from the coronavirussaid his wife.
The Tony Award nominated star has been battling the coronavirus for more than two weeks. His wife, Amanda Kloots, has kept fans informed by sharing updates about her health on her Instagram.
Saturday was the 18th on which he was sedated in the intensive care unit, Kloots told his followers on social media. While in the hospital, he began to have clotting problems in his right leg and blood did not reach his toes. The blood thinners he received to fix clotting problems were affecting his blood pressure and causing internal bleeding in his intestines, Kloots said.
He is hospitalized at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, where he lives with his family while performing at “Rock of Ages.”
“They put him on anticoagulants for clotting, unfortunately anticoagulants were causing other problems,” he said Saturday. “The right leg will be amputated today.”
Kloots started the #wakeupnick hashtag on Instagram and asked fans to send him videos of them dancing and imploring him to wake up. Later on Saturday, she shared an update that her surgery had gone well.
“He passed the surgery, which is really good because his body is obviously quite weak,” said Kloots. “Hopefully he just relaxes and rests.”
Her friends have started a GoFundMe campaign to help them pay the hospital bills and make their home wheelchair accessible, Kloots said.
“I’m really impressed guys … I want to thank anyone who has given everything they can,” she said tearfully. “It is overwhelming, I really appreciate it.”
