Britt Dekker was in the middle of recording her program Britts Oldies when she decided to quit because of the health of the elderly in the nursing home where they filmed. The presenter misses the participants and therefore regularly faces them.
“We already decided before the lockdown of the care homes that we could no longer continue filming. It just didn’t feel responsible anymore. But that gave me a very strange feeling, because all of a sudden I liked all the old people I just had a band with. no longer see “, said the 28-year-old presenter in conversation with NU.nl.
Dekker knows how lonely the elderly are now, because she walked with them for weeks and talked to the nurses. Normally, residents of the nursing home always eat together, but because of the corona measures, they are now all in their own room.
“That’s why I made an appeal to bring your old tablet to a nursing home. Then those people can call family and each other. Because loneliness is really bad, they all say.” I’d rather die of corona than loneliness “said one. So I want to keep calling on everyone to make an extra call. People can live on that for days.”
Making wishes come true
In Britts Oldies Dekker not only follows the residents and caretakers, but also lets them fulfill their wishes. “That was actually a very small part of the program, but those people all liked it so much. It became something to look forward to for me: this no longer felt like work, but as if I could really add something to their lives “I also hope that we can continue to fulfill our wishes again when we all get to see each other again. Those people deserve that.”
Unlike the presenter, the elderly in the program are not used to the cameras, which generates enthusiastic responses. “They all thought it was so special that they would come on television, it was not about anything else. For us that is quite normal, because everyone can make something on YouTube nowadays. But those people are still from the time when there was one channel We also had to cut it out continuously, it kept coming back in every conversation they thought it was so fantastic. “
