Britons celebrate Brexit Day with a countdown, light show and special coin

The British Prime Minister Johnson has explained the plans for the celebration of Brexit Day. The break with the European Union on January 31 will be celebrated exuberantly with light shows, waving flags, a projected clock, a special brexit coin and a speech by Johnson. But it seems that the Big Ben will not ring.

Downing Street 10 states that the United Kingdom will regain its independence on January 31 and that date is therefore a significant day in the history of the UK. “The government wants to use this moment to heal wounds, reunite communities and look ahead to the country that we want to build over the next decade.”

To celebrate, a countdown clock is projected on the prime minister’s official residence and a special 50 pence brexit coin will be put into circulation on 1 February. Johnson is one of the first to receive the coin, on which the words “peace, prosperity and friendship with all countries” can be read.

Big Ben

The unveiling of the plans follows at the end of a week in which there has been commotion in the British parliament about whether Big Ben will start to sound at the festivities. According to chairman Hoyle van het Lagerhuis, ringing the world-famous clocks, which are currently being renovated, will cost no less than 500,000 pounds. That is so expensive, because the clockwork would have to be replaced and a temporary floor would have to be built, which would delay the renovation.

Johnson then called on the people to raise money. Over 240,000 pounds have now been raised, but according to President Hoyle that money cannot be used because parliamentary rules prohibit this.

The leader of the Brexit Party, Nigel Farage, lashed out at Johnson. “I can already see how we are being mocked worldwide:” The British are leaving the EU, but they can’t even ring a bell. “
