British Prince Philip, Queen Elizabeth II’s husband, transferred his ceremonial military role to his daughter-in-law Camilla on Wednesday.

The 99-year-old Duke of Edinburgh has made little public appearance since he announced his retirement in May 2017. Since then, he still officially held a military role.
In a rare public appearance, on Wednesday he transferred that ceremonial function of colonel-in-chief of the infantry regiment The Rifles after 67 years to Camilla, the wife of Crown Prince Charles.
It is striking that because of the corona crisis, two separate ceremonies took place to arrange the transfer. Prince Philip’s ceremony took place on the grounds of Windsor Castle, outside London. The Queen and Prince Philip have been staying there since April because of the corona pandemic.
Camilla, who holds the title of Duchess of Cornwall, then resumed her official function at a ceremony at her home in Highgrove House, some 100 miles away.
