British man reportedly transmitted coronavirus to more than a dozen people of different nationalities

The coronavirus now known as Covid-19 has claimed many lives since its appearance several weeks ago.

Currently, there are more than 40,570 people infected with the virus worldwide, most of whom live in mainland China. On the other hand, so far there have been around 910 deaths from coronavirus.

Countries around the world are currently alert to the spread of the virus. However, although measures have been taken to screen for the disease in travelers who may be infected, there is still a risk that symptoms will not be detectable at the time of screening.

The incubation period of the virus can indeed range from 7 to 14 days. This allows some carriers of the virus to cross borders, especially if they do not yet know that they have been infected.

This is probably what happened in the case of this Briton who contracted the virus while on a business trip to Singapore and then passed it on to a dozen other people.

The origin of the infection

The 50-year-old man was reported to have traveled to Singapore to attend a sales conference from January 20-22. The event welcomed more than 100 people, including a participant from Wuhan, the Chinese city where the coronavirus epidemic began. According to health officials, it was during this event that the Briton contracted the virus.

Since he was not yet showing symptoms of the disease, the man did not suspect that he had been infected with Covid-19 during his visit to Singapore. After his business trip, he went to France, to a ski resort where he spent a few days with his family, notably from January 24 to 28.

The virus has been transmitted to several people of different nationalities

During his stay at the ski resort, the Briton transmitted the virus to a dozen people around him. According to reports, 5 of the infected are from France, 4 are from the United Kingdom and one is from Spain.

The Briton’s case is quite unusual, as it appears that on average, people infected with the Covid-19 virus transmit the virus to only two other people. Officials thus qualify the Briton as a “superspreader”.

At the moment, the man is hospitalized in London. As for the authorities, they continue to search for all the people who were in contact with him, to name only the passengers who were on the same flight when he returned to the United Kingdom.
